A Risk Assessment is the process of recognizing actual and potential hazards in the workplace while analyzing the level or the degree of risk associated to it. Through a Risk Assessment, employers, companies, and organizations will be able to establish appropriate processes to eliminate, control, or prevent the degree of risk that constitutes a hazard.
Generally, a Risk Assessment requires thorough inspections of the workplace in order for employers to identify the different factors or processes that could inflict harm. A Risk Assessment is important because it helps a company form a good and effective occupational health and safety management plan. Risk Assessments are conducted with the use of a Risk Assessment Form.

A Risk Evaluation allows employers to be aware as well as to raise awareness in the workplace with regard to hazardous objects or situations in the workplace. It also allows the identification of the people who are affected by these risks while providing measures of control or preventive methods to reduce the level of risk.
A Risk Assessment is conducted by doing periodic inspections of the workplace for areas that may pose a danger. Asking staff or employees of any hazards they feel is one way to assess the areas of risk. Risk Assessment should be done with the presence of a safety representative. Safety Representatives are workers who are elected or selected for the role to represent the health and safety interests of workers within a work group.
To be sure that all hazards are found, it is imperative that the Safety Representatives look at all aspects of the work, include non-routine activities in the evaluation, include people who work off site, observe the way the the work is organized or implemented, and include an assessment of workers depending on level, age, persons with disabilities, or expectant mothers.
Provide a Consistent Routine for Checks
Risk assessments must be consistently done. Establishing a routine to finger-point potential hazards that affect people in or around the workplace enables employers to benchmark their standards and areas for improvement.
Be Aware of the People Affected
Once the potential cause of harm has been identified, the next step is to identify the people who are directly affected by it. Begin with your full-time and part-time employees and evaluate to whom these risk factors will affect. Using Health Risk Assessment Forms allows employers and Safety Representatives to take note of any potential health risks that are found in a workplace.

Determine the Degree of Risk and Impose Preventive Measures
For every potential hazard, employers have to gauge the degree of hazard it constitutes. Does it equate to a high, a medium, or a low level of danger? Not all risks can be completely taken away, no matter how grave your precautionary measures are. However, it is essential to do something to minimize the potential of the risk.
Ranking or prioritizing the level of hazard is one way to help determine which one poses the most serious or grave threat to the workplace and the people. This is usually established by taking into consideration the amount of exposure an employee has for accidents or injuries, the frequency of the exposure, and the probability of the occurrence.
Practice Proper Organization
Risk Assessments should be done with the use of a Sample Risk Assessment Form in order for employers and Safety Representatives to conduct objective and clear evaluations. Documenting the results of a Risk Assessment enables employers to periodically review them to ensure the continuation of the management’s implementation of safety procedures.
