student evaluation form samples

A Student Evaluation is one of the many ways a teacher can assess how well a student was able to internalize and understand a topic discussed in class. It is a method used to calibrate a student’s level of performance, to determine his strengths, and to assist or work out ways to turn weaknesses into strengths.

An evaluation is a long-term goal and is conducted at a particular period of time. A lot of people dread hearing the word evaluation. To many, an evaluation is a form of an exam or a test; however, an evaluation is actually more than that and is a necessary tool in school.

Student Evaluations

When a student is being evaluated, teachers usually look at a broad range of activities and tasks such as observations, worksheets, essay, presentations, group work, performances, and exams.

Teachers mainly evaluate a student in order for them to gauge their level of understanding and knowledge – what they have learned and the outcome of their learning. By doing periodic evaluations, an educator becomes well-informed about her method of teaching, what topics should be taught, and what areas need to be afforded more focus to promote further learning and understanding in class.

Ways to Achieve Objective Student Evaluations

By Giving Out Tests or Exams

Testing students is a diagnostic tool that helps teachers determine the type of information that has already been digested by a student. It is also a great way to check if the student was able to thoroughly keep up with the topic that was discussed and also enables teachers to provide a direct feedback right after the exam. Test or exams can be given to students in different formats:

Matching Questions

These types of examinations are helpful in determining a student’s ability to recognize relationships between pairs of words or words and definitions.

Essays

Essay exams are considered to be the most difficult and time-consuming type of examinations; however, they are deemed to be the most effective type of tests because they allow a student to organize, evaluate, and think – making it a good way to gauge a student’s level of understanding in a particular topic.

Mutliple Choice

Multiple Choice types of tests help a teacher determine a student’s ability to interpret graphs, tables, charts, and related material. Multiple Choice types of tests are fairly common but difficult to construct.

Through Oral Participation and Presentations

Through Oral Participation and individual or group presentations, a teacher will not only be able to gauge a student’s level of understanding, he will also be able to see the student’s level of preparedness and will in turn help to enhance and instill confidence and social interaction among students.

By Building a Standard Set of Criteria

As soon as a method for evaluation has been established, a teacher’s next concern is to formulate a standard set of criteria which will serve as your rubric when grading and rating your students. Creating a rubric enables teachers to measure the effectiveness of her teaching methods, to gauge her student’s degree of understanding topics, promotes a fair and balanced assessment, and sets proper expectations among students so that they will understand the results of their assessment and find ways to improve.
