Long queues at airport immigration lanes is an issue that travelers often encounter in most international airports of both developed and developing nations. In the United States, different government programs have been initiated to help resolve this problem. One of them began in the early 2000s and is called Global Entry.

Global Entry allows US Citizens and citizens of other partner countries to directly go through Global Entry airports kiosks to avoid the long lines in standard immigration lanes. This article will further discuss on how Global Entry works, how to fill out their application form, and how you can avail of it for your travels.

What Is Global Entry?

Global Entry is a program of the United States Customs and Border Protection department that permits speedy travel to low risk through US borders and airports. The program uses automated kiosks at immigration lanes in airports and borders where pre-screened individuals go through. This process aims to fast-track and lessen the waiting times in airport immigration lanes while ensuring that travelers are properly screened.

These automated kiosks will scan one’s fingerprint, machine-ready passport, and/or may also take a picture of the traveler. Note that random customs checks may still occur and some travelers with Global Entry eligibility will be asked to present their passports and luggage to immigration officers.

Who Are Eligible for Global Entry?

Global Entry is primarily available to all citizens of the United States and any green card holders. Nationals from the United Kingdom, India, Mexico, Singapore, Panama, Colombia, South Korea, and Germany are also qualified for the Global Entry program.

Requirements for each country may vary but they will typically involve filling out general application forms that is provided by their specific governments. Applying for the Global Entry program includes an online process, payment of a non-refundable fee, and then showing up at a Customs and Border Protection office for a scheduled interview and biometrics capture. Global Entry kiosk access if valid for five years.
