animal shelter forms

Aside from the universe, our curious minds share a common interest in animals. A pet at home is like a baby. The pet owner buys an appropriate diet food, gets a regular visit to a veterinarian, and gives toys. While some people treat pets like royalty, they can also experience abuse and violence from humans, which prompted the existence of animal shelters.

Why Are There Animal Shelters?

The effect of wars brought pleasure in acts of cruelty. After the war in the 12th century, the British used their dogs in fights against larger and stronger animals like the wild boars. Similar to a basketball game, the large crowd of spectators roared and cheered for their expected victor. Whether their bet was a winner or loser, it was the thrilling and breathtaking clash between these animals on the floor that was worth the time. Later on, this sport became an entertainment coined as bear-baiting during Shakespeare’s time. Some see it as fun, but some claim that it was the beginning of man’s cruelty to animals that existed even until the present time.

Animal cruelty must stop. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) founder, Henry Bergh, felt immense concern for the maltreatment of these animals. The harsh whipping on workhorses by their owners and strangling of stray dogs and cats by poundmasters. The intention of providing care for these homeless and abused animals became widely known that thousands of animal shelters existed around the globe. Laws also protect these animals. Animal Shelter Forms used by animal shelters help them track the status and condition of the animals when they first enter the home. It becomes part of the record of the animal in the shelter that will help any interested pet adopter to understand the nature of his or her adopted pet.

Abused and Abandoned

Animal Cruelty did not exist in stray animals only. Domestic violence, whether it is on a person or an animal, happens even with our current laws of protecting them. There are different ways to inflict pain on an animal. Here are the common forms of violence on animals.

  • Growls of a Dog

Evidence shows that the earliest race to start this form of blood sport is the Roman Empire. During the Roman Conquest of Britain, the Romans and British armies used dogs to fight alongside them. Because of the potential they have seen in this breed of dogs, they got interested and started exporting these dogs for entertainment in colosseums. Hence, the birth of dogfighting commenced. Before the battle, the dogs have a leash to hold them in place. In the early days, the battlefield is similar to a boxing arena. However, ever since laws started banning such acts, the battlefield can be as simple as a vacant building or an open area. Once released, the stronger dog becomes the winner. The bruises or scars left after a battle is just a fraction of the stress and trauma. The training process itself is as deadly as the battle. Some critics explain that training the dog through drowning and strangling helps them improve their resistance to pain. At present, dogfighting is the most common form of animal cruelty. Animal advocates continue to call an action to end such violence to these furry babies.

  • Fight Against My Kind

Aside from dogs, chickens also experience the same violence in a battlefield against their kind. Cockfighting is a universal sport that started in the Southeast Asian region. It becomes a common pastime for people in European, American, and Asian countries. Also, cockfighting is a gambling sport because people take their bets before the fight. Bets can start as small as  $20 to $1000 or more depending on the event. Although these chickens have no big jaws to tear the opponent apart, the strength of their beaks and claws is enough to send their opponent to its deathbed. This activity usually happens in a cockpit where the crowd can see the fight from all angles. Although some revisions occurred in the rules of the battle where a damaged chicken may withdraw from the match, some still prefer an all-out finish. Isn’t it sad to raise a chicken and end its life in a cockpit?

  • Keeping Animals without Knowledge

Animal hoarding is a common form of animal cruelty. It is the excessive taking of animals without proper knowledge and understanding of caring for these animals. Just like human babies, pets need care, attention, and vitamins to keep them healthy from diseases. Some people argue that animal hoarding is a form of mental illness than a criminal act because hoarders are frequently experiencing emotional troubles than voluntarily hoard because of criminal intentions. If ever you notice your neighbor is taking in animals regularly, watch out for these signs. A hoarder is usually unaware of the number of animals under their home and shows signs of isolation from the community. Also, a hoarder’s home may not be suitable to live for a pet because there may be broken furniture and holes on the walls and floors. Moreover, the animal itself may show signs of distress and may have some fleas and vermin. It is best to report to an animal shelter and the police if any of these symptoms occur.

  • Fur Factories in the Asian Continent

Humans are classy. We have a sophisticated taste that even in clothing wear, we use animal furs in the fashion industry. The supply of furs does not come from illegal means but rather by the use of fur farms. However, there are only selected countries that allow this kind of business operation. China is a known country that has no penalty for fur farming that more than 50% of the United States’ supply comes from this country. Minks are the most common captured animal for these farms because of their silky fur. In cold countries, fur clothing is standard. Its early existence happened in ancient times. Aside from minks, other furry animals can get stripped off from their form.

  • Modify My Genes

Science helped us in ways that improved our lifestyle. Because of biotechnology, we can inject animals with something that’ll make them stronger and better than their previous life. Studying the relationship between mutations and sickness in animals is the best way to develop a cure. Plants are no exemption. Genetic modification help in faster production and bigger plants. Selective breeding is the method of propagation of a new breed. The intention of genetic modification may not be the form of violence that we often associate. But, since animals cannot give consent, doing experiments on their genes is still an assertion of dominance.

  • The Perfect Experiment

Remember your biggest hurdle as a student? Yes, it is conceptualizing a research paper. It requires a lot of time and has a lot of rules, especially with the methods of conducting experiments. In the field of medicine and psychology, the involvement of human beings in a test is a significant factor for consideration. There is around 70% chance of not getting a research paper approved. Therefore, most scientists looked for ways to continue their academic journey by using animals as test subjects. Although some may argue that animals as test subjects are not a problem because of the faster reproduction rate than humans, it is still immoral to use animals in experiments. There are ongoing debates on this matter. Whether allowed or not, an experiment’s test subjects should justify as to why no alternative test subject is possible. Otherwise, better look for another topic of inquiry for research purposes.

Am I Too Cruel?

Linking evil deeds with violence is a common ground for the majority of the population. But psychologists would instead search for rational reasons to justify the acts of violence. Indeed, psychologic disorders such as zoosadism and crush fetishism are some of the causes of behavior. Behavior profiling showed that murderers have experience with animal cruelty in their childhood days. If ever you know of somebody suffering from this kind of particular need, call the doctor and family as soon as possible. No known cure yet is available today, but hopefully, everything will be in its proper place.

Because of technology, social media became a channel to share such acts of violence. Matthew Maloney posted a video on facebook of him biting a rat. Teenagers Callum Gibson Mckenzie and Hunter Lawrence Jonasen posted a Snapchat video on crushing a live possum using the wheels of their car. A woman named Jordan Christie, who was around her 20s, cut a cat’s head off and used the blood to leave a threatening message because of a heated argument on money matters. She was guilty of all charges but only served ten months in custody. These situations are only a few documented cases of human abuse on animals. Either doing it as revenge or as entertainment, people should help one another stop for animal abuse to continue in the future. We all need to care and love mother nature along with the diverse creature breathing on it.

How Do I Save An Animal?

The existence of animal shelters saved thousands of animals from the abusive hands of humans. While it may be true that animal cruelty still exists today at some unknown and hidden place, the community is more vigilant to domestic violence on animals. Fortunately, animal shelters do not only serve those who are victims of abuse. They also provide services to reunite lost pets with their owners and to deal with your pet’s unusual behavior. Most probably, you have no idea where to start to get help. Here are simple steps to save you from all your troubles as a concerned citizen or as a pet owner.

Step 1: Locate the Nearest Animal Shelter

There are lots of ways to report animal abuse. However, if you are in a situation where you have to rescue the animal and send it to a safer place, the first thing to remember is to locate the nearest animal shelter. The closer the accommodation is to your location, the better will be the condition of the animal, especially if the animal suffers from extreme trauma. If ever the animal is bleeding, then better call a veterinary clinic that you know. These creatures can also experience pain, just like the pain you feel when you accidentally cut yourself. Immediate aid to their current condition can save a life.

Step 2: Examine the Condition

If you are not a registered veterinarian, then you can examine the rescued animal by telling the rescuers the things you notice that are different from what you usually see they do. Moreover, you do not need to have some background on the first aid for animals to do the step. Be keen on observations and tell the professionals about this unusual behavior. These descriptions are extra helpful for the experts to plan the appropriate actions in worst-case scenarios.

Some apparent observations are the following: loss of appetite, aggressive behavior, decrease in energy level, tendency to hide, frequent vomiting, etc. If ever the animal is showing these symptoms, be careful when going near it. As the cliche line says, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Step 3: Fill in An Animal Shelter Form

Before admitting an animal to a shelter, register first its details. It is similar to a medical registration form wherein the necessary information about the animal’s history and condition on a sheet of paper seems everything. Record keeping of medical history is a valuable tool to track the patient’s status in the past that may affect his or her situation in the present. Past diseases could be triggers or causes of the current conditions. Moreover, animal shelters need this information from the rescued animals because it helps them understand the progress of the animal’s health.

Also, some animal shelters require volunteers. If ever you want to apply as a volunteer, there is a separate form for you to fill in. You can help in the animal rescues, organize events related to caring for the rights of animals, and do some outreach programs in your community. There are different ways to become a volunteer, and perhaps, touching the domain of animal welfare is a good start.

Step 4: Leave Contact Person’s Details

If ever you feel attached to the rescued animal and plans to adopt it, make sure to leave your contact details behind. It can be your work’s mobile number or the email address you usually check daily. If you have no intention to adopt, this step is still necessary. During the initial examination of the animal, your observations can help professionals act accordingly. Perhaps, you have friends who share the same passion for animal welfare as those in the shelter; then, it’s best to keep your contact details in touch.

Step 5: Submit the Form to Assigned Personnel

Rescued animals are always welcome in the shelter. Reuniting lost pets is also another priority of animal shelters. As emphasized, these housing accommodations for animals need forms for documentation purposes. Similar to a school that must be in par with the standards to keep their operation, animal shelters must follow the rules and regulations to keep their post. They need programs that will amplify the vision and mission of animal welfare. The existence of these shelters was to find a home for abused and abandoned animals. However, finding a way to end violence on human beings and animals entirely is the primary purpose of these shelters. It all begins with an animal shelter form.

No matter how advanced our technological means to provide entertainment, the old fashioned animal cruelty spectacle still exists. Maybe, this happens because of humankind’s dominance on the planet. Still, it is not an excuse to take animals for granted just because of the need to enjoy. With the presence of animal shelters, spreading awareness of the welfare of animals becomes more natural. Shortly, animals will experience a better and worry less life free from violence.
