What is a Training Review?

A training review is conducted before the program starts and after it is being held. This review is essential to be done, since it is one of the ways of measuring the effectiveness of the training.

This is also used to evaluate if trainers did a great in meeting the training goals and objectives. A training review is done before the training evaluates whether the criteria or objectives are realistic for the trainees to meet. Whereas a training review is done afterwards to evaluate whether criteria or objectives are met.

There are different kinds of reviews that can be performed. One of which is the review of an employee to see if he or she is capable with the job applied for. This review is done with an employee review form.

How to Write a Training Review

Training reviews are used to identify the progress, development and training needs for it to be more effective. Training reviews are often filled up by the trainees, and and evaluates the trainer and the training program. Here is a common way of how training reviews are written:

  • trainee’s name, date, course title, and the trainer’s name
  • the evaluation of the trainer and program (this contains questions about the trainer and training, and are often scaled from 1 – 10)
  • comments and suggestions of the trainee

A training program is considered as an organization’s project that are carefully planned and  design for a particular aim. Therefore, these program/projects are reviewed with project review forms.

Guidelines for Training Reviews

Training reviews are conducted in order to make sure that trainings will benefit both the trainee and the trainer. These are also used as a communication tool and for improvement of both. Here are some guidelines for training reviews:

  • should be done systematically and formally
  • written briefly and concisely
  • does not have to be long, short and brief review will do
  • focused on the training criteria and objectives
  • objectives should be realistic
  • questions should be straightforward and understandable
  • should not contain any offensive words (such as discrimination)
  • should be relevant to the training program
  • should allow the trainees to rate or scale the training program
  • should have some spaces provided for trainee’s comments and suggestions
  • serves as a training assessment or feedback
