Writing a performance review is very similar to writing a peer review report where a group of individuals come together to make an assessment or evaluation of a colleague’s performance and productivity at work or a project. Although performance reviews may be done individually, or by two or more persons.

For companies, Annual Performance Reviews are conducted, which involves the yearly assessment of an employee’s development with regards to his productivity at work. Through this, the company can figure out whether a certain employee should receive appraisals, incentives and bonuses, or if an employee should be given a notice for improvement.

What is Performance Review Process?

A performance review process pertains to the procedures taken when conducting a performance review. Usually the process involves the different three stages: planning, proper review and post review.

Your planning stage includes the provision of forms, making partial review drafts, compiling the whole year review and the scheduling of the annual review.

Your proper review involves the discussion between you and the employee, and coming up of an agreed action plan.

The post review stage includes making a report and assessing whether appraisals must be given to the employee. These stages are basically the same stages you take when you complete your Risk Assessment Review Forms.

How to Fill Out a Performance Review

Normally, performance reviews are filled out by managers or any appropriate person in an organization. But some instances may require employees to make their self-assessment following a specific performance review form format:

  • Reflect. First of all, you need to reflect on your performance. Be sure to fill out your review form honestly.
  • Accomplish. Complete all the basic details needed in an evaluation form.
  • Give unbiased scores. Assess yourself without bias. If you think that the specification does not really apply to your work attitude, then don’t hesitate to give yourself a lower score.

Guidelines for a Performance Review

Completing a performance review or Appraisal Review Forms needs to be done carefully and critically. Thus, there are guidelines one must follow:

  • State the purpose. Define the purpose of your review. To do so, make the objectives of the performance review clear to your employee and see to it that these objectives are met at the end of the review process. Also, this guideline will need you to set a goal whether the review would be for developmental goal, innovative goal, or improvement goal.
  • Manage and coach. This means you’ll have to go through an observation and documentation process. For observation, find out the trends in the performances of your employees whether it be doing better through time or not. Make a documentation of these reviews, and then try to give helpful advice to your employees.
  • Give Appraising Performance Details. Let your employee complete an appraisal form, and using the documentation you went through, write the appraisal deserving for your employee.
  • Conduct a strategy. As the manager, you’ll have to share with your employees a certain strategy which will be beneficial to your company and the employee. Answer the question, “what actions should be taken in order to improve?”

These are just some of the guidelines in coming up with performance reviews. You may also want to see sample performance review form doc to fully comprehend the given guidelines.
