What Is a Manager Feedback Form?

The manager feedback form is a type of form used as a means of evaluating the manager or the head of a certain company. This is meant to determine if the manager is actually respected by their subordinates and if the manager is capable of actually leading the company into a successful future.

A manager feedback form is the complete opposite of an employee feedback form in the sense that, instead of the manager providing feedback on an employee’s performance, the employees themselves are the ones providing feedback to the manager, evaluating the manager’s actions in trying to lead the company.

How to Write Feedback to Managers

Writing a manager feedback is just like writing an employee feedback, but instead of focusing on multiple employees we will be focusing on the manager.

Here are some instructions for drafting feedback for managers:

  • Review some Sample Manager Evaluation Forms to help identify the criteria and the processes in focus.
  • Begin every feedback by clearly identifying the manager of your company.
  • Also state any managerial experience, training, or other course they have taken prior to managing at the company.
  • Identify yourself as the evaluator of the manager.
  • State the date the feedback was made.
  • Indicate questions that directly address how well the manager has been able to perform their assigned tasks.
  • Implement a standard grading system to maintain measurable objectivity throughout the feedback form.

Why Is Manager Feedback Important?

Manager feedback can bring untold personnel advantages to the company. They are usually initiated when the superior of the manager wishes to conduct an evaluation by interviewing the managers’ subordinates. This gives them a better understanding of what the manager has been doing, what has been achieved during their employment thus far, and whether any intervention, training, delegation, etc., is required.

In most Sample Feedback Forms the option to identify the person giving the feedback is optional. This is to allow the informant some anonymity and encourage honest feedback.

Guidelines on How to Give a Manager Feedback

Giving your boss or manager feedback can be difficult, depending on the type of feedback, for obvious reasons.

If you were to give positive feedback, it would be simple knowing your manager or boss would be flattered, compared to if you are required to give negative feedback where just the mere thought of doing so could backfire.

As we’ve seen, sometimes it just needs to be done. And sometimes it needs to be done face to face.

Here are some tips on how to give your boss some needed feedback:

  • Always take the time to determine when and where you should give the feedback. Also try to determine the nature of the feedback, whether it is constructive or destructive, and prepare accordingly for the expected outcomes.
  • Take note that the manager is not allowed to fire you or remove you from the organization for your evaluation. If this happens out of a personal grudge, this will not hold in court and will often prove to be disadvantageous to the manager.
  • The feedback must be as honest as possible so as to allow room for genuine improvement in the company. Remember the bigger picture and purpose for this feedback.
  • When all else fails, try to review some Sample Performance Feedback Forms to mimic the professional and neutral tone of the evaluations.
