Definition of Hazardous Substances

Hazardous substances include chemicals, bacteria and other microorganisms, dust, or any other substances that can have disastrous effects on a person’s health and safety. It is an employer’s duty to control an employee’s exposure to such hazardous substances to prevent any diseases, illness, or physical injury. An employer can also use Health Assessment Forms for assessing the physical health of their employees before hiring them, to make sure that they are physically fit for the job.

Three General Steps in a COSHH Assessment

  • Identification of the hazards: This is done by carefully reading the product labels of materials being used and the safety data sheets of equipment being operated. It is also important to consider the products of processes being done, such as dust from cutting and grinding materials like wood, silica, and others.
  • Identification of the individuals affected and how: It is important to determine who are exposed to the risks and how they are exposed and affected, so that proper elimination of the risks can be planned. When determining this, it is important to keep in mind how the workers will be exposed, like the route of the hazardous substances into the body, how often they work with the substance and for how long, and who else might be exposed accidentally or when visiting the workplace, such as visitors or people in public.

  • Evaluation and elimination of the risks: Before planning the precautionary measures to eliminate or control the hazards and risks, it is important to evaluate them first to rank them in terms of the urgency and level of the risk. It is only then that you can decide if there are any alternatives available that you can use instead. If this is not practical and possible, then control measure to lessen the exposure of the workers should be put in place, such as having proper ventilation. In addition to that, one control measure is the use of personal protective gear.

After these control measures are put in place, constant monitoring should be done to make sure that they are maintained and and properly used, especially the protective gear. Routine health checks can also be done to make sure that the workers are safe and healthy, in spite of being exposed to certain hazards and risks.

Using our COSHH Assessment Forms can help in making sure that these assessments are carried out thoroughly. You may also check out our Physical Assessment Forms for checking the physical health of the people who want to be employed in a company and for annual check-ups of regular employees.
