What Are Model Consent Forms?

Just like informed consent forms, model consent forms are documents used for anything that requires a person’s authorization prior to the commencement of a task/action.

Therefore, in the modeling industry, signing a model consent form signifies that the consentee (the model) is informed about the use of any footage, approves of it, gives his/her permission for a photo/video shoot to occur, and waives any claims for whatever footage the photographer captures.

Using model consent forms also serves photographers and other involved party in a business sense. Models are paid a sum for their modeling services and photographers may either use the captured images as part of his/her portfolio or sell prints of the images. Companies may then use those images in advertising, employee magazines, textbooks, websites, and various other purposes without fearing litigation from using a private individual’s photos.

Guidelines for Filling Out Model Consent Forms

  • You do not have to be a professional model in order to fill out a model consent form. As long as your image was taken and will be used for commercial purposes, you may need to sign the consent form to waive all your rights for the use of those prints.
  • Make sure to read the fine print. Make sure to read the fine print of the model consent form since its terms are often confused with that of photo consent forms. This is to avoid any confusion. Read it carefully for any possible loop holes that can be used to take advantage of you.
  • Ask questions. In the event that you do not understand some items listed in the consent, be sure to ask your employer or a lawyer. This tip should go hand-in-hand with the previous tip so that you will not be taken advantage of.
  • Remember that the Model Consent Form is a binding document. Once you affix your signature to the model consent form and a notary public notarizes it, the document is legal. You no longer have any rights to any footage or prints of your photographs. If you wish to dispute the validity of the consent form at this point, you may need to file a complaint at court.
