Getting Started

Before filling out the contents of an invoice, a freelancer must first decide on a few aspects to include in his form.

Naming Your Price

As with all businesses, the million dollar question after deciding on a product is the amount of money they will charge for it. Since designing is a profession that requires skill and years of practice, it is important to base your product price according to what it’s worth and being upfront with your clients about the cost.

Demonstrate Professionalism in Your Invoices

Your invoice showcases your skills, so you might want to take a little time off your busy schedule to construct an invoice that perfectly displays your talents and abilities.

Be Upfront About the Terms and Conditions

Invoicing is a perfect way to itemize and outline the details of a project. Providing certain terms and conditions to your clients helps them understand the cost, the project, and the service better and reduces the chances of late payments.

The Elements of an Invoice

Now that you have decided on a price and have set up certain terms and conditions for your freelance work, the next step is to formulate the perfect invoice that contains the correct details.

Provide the Name and the Address

As with other business forms, the name of the client and their address should be first indicated in the bill.

Reference Details

Since invoicing is also considered as a method of documentation, make sure that your invoice contains the necessary details such as an invoice number, the name of the project, the invoice date, and a reference number.

Itemize Cost

Create a description of all the work carried out in the project such as overtime work, travel expenses, daily or hourly rates, or miscellaneous expenses and indicate the cost of each one. It would also save you from a lot of trouble in giving out explanations if you show a comparison of the total amount due and the original estimated cost and include any additional cost or work that was not included in the estimate.

Indicate the Total Amount Due

After you have created a breakdown of the costs, indicate the total amount due and its due date. State the amount needed for down-payment for the project to commence, the mode of payment, and any charges or interest for late payments.

Invoicing just doesn’t help you expand your business, it helps you get paid on time, avoid getting paid late, and helps you deal with your clients quickly. Make sure you deal with customers in a professional and efficient way and start practicing the method of invoicing now.
