What Is an Affidavit of Support Form?

An affidavit of support form is a document that one uses in the event that he or she wishes to accept the financial responsibility of another person, usually a relative, who is coming to the individual’s country to live there permanently. So basically the person who signs the affidavit for the relative or person coming to the country for permanent residency is now that persons’s sponsor.

The responsibility of the sponsor will last until that person being supported will become a citizen of that country or until that person has credited at least 40 quarters of work (10 years) So make sure to properly fill these forms up if you have any relative or friend who wishes for you to become their support.

How to Write an Affidavit of Support

For those that wish to sponsor someone into their country, one must learn to write a proper affidavit of support. Be sure that the following information is provided when making one:

• Name of the person supporting the individual
• Country in where the sponsor is located
• Sponsor’s complete address
• Sponsor’s position
• Sponsor’s monthly income
• Sponsor’s company’s name and address
• Names of the individuals that are being sponsored

Things You Would Want to Know as a Sponsor Using an Affidavit of Support

• Knowing what your obligations are. By signing the affidavit, the sponsor has agreed to provide an intending immigrant financial support to at least 125% of the poverty level. In the event that the immigrant wishes to apply for federal or state-means public benefits, then the sponsor’s income and assets will be used to determine the immigrant’s eligibility.

• In the event that the sponsor does not provide financial support to the immigrant, then the immigrant may sue.

• A sponsor’s obligation begins when the immigrant acquires permanent resident status. It ends if the immigrant becomes a natural citizen, death of either the sponsor or immigrant, immigrant abandons and departs from the country, or if the immigrant has worked for at least 40 quarters under the social security act.
