A Self-Assessment is a vital tool used to constructively and critically evaluate an individual’s level and quality of performance. Self-assessments may be done in a school setting or in the workplace and can be applied to workers, employees, employers, students, or members of an administration.
Self-Assessments require careful reflection and analysis and have to be conducted in an accurate and objective method in order to provide good results. Self-assessments also enable a supervisor or an individual to determine their strengths, weaknesses, achievements, and abilities. Our Assessment Forms include Student Self-Assessment Forms and Employee Self-Assessment Forms for quick and easy access for your evaluation needs.

Creating your own assessment can be a challenging thing to do, especially if your aim is to provide an objective assessment of your performance but not want to appear vain or conceited. Since an employee’s self-assessment is one of the best and practical methods there is to engage an employee in the discussion of his performance and career goals, below is a list of guidelines to follow when conducting an evaluation of one’s self:
Highlight Your Achievements and Strengths
If you have it, flaunt it. Do not feel embarrassed to showcase your skills and abilities and to describe how they were able to dramatically impact the company or the organization as a whole. For example, if you are in the Sales and Marketing team and have contributed to the sales impact of the department, you can say, “We have always aimed to improve and increase our monthly quota. I am pleased to let you know that I have been able to contribute to our numbers and have sold over 600 policies in the past 4 months.”
Be Brave Enough to Critique Yourself
Aside from highlighting your achievements, you will also need to critique the areas you need to improve on. Do not be too focused on your achievements and your abilities but also learn how to admit and own up to your mistakes. For example, “I acknowledge that I have a knack for sales and marketing and can even go beyond the allotted monthly quota. However, I also admit to having tardiness issues that can sometimes affect my productivity.”

Talk About Your Career Goals
Self-assessments should not just be about strength and weaknesses or overall work performance. A self-assessment can also be an opportunity for you to properly reflect on your goals and your plans for your career. Take this time to sit down with your supervisor and let them know what is important in your career and how you can further strengthen your abilities.
Be Professional
Remember to maintain professionalism when conducting a self-assessment. Do not use this time as an opportunity to imprecate or curse your supervisor or to find fault with your colleagues. Remember, your self-assessment is a reflection of you, your character, your goals, your achievements, and the way you handle yourself in times of stress. A well-constructed, perfectly polished, and professionally-made self-assessment will reflect your capabilities as an employee and a person.
