The Counseling Process

The counseling process is a cooperative process to help clients address and solve issues. Counselors generally enable clients to explore their life and their feelings by allowing open and free communication.

It is crucial that a counselor does not attach himself emotionally to a client and should not pass judgement or advise. Effective counselling is able to lessen confusion and promote positive changes of behavior.

The process of counseling typically goes through the following phases:

1. Establishing a Relationship

The counselor lets the client identify and explore issues that directly affect him. Through interviews, verbal, and non-verbal messages, clients and counselors will be able to gauge their level of professional relationship and if the client feels empathy from the counselor.

Counselors should make sure that the client feels comfortable by inviting social conversations to reduce anxiety, giving the client time to respond, and show interest when the client is speaking.

2. Problem Assessment

In the middle of establishing a relationship with the client, the counselor then tries to assess the issues that the client wishes to tackle.

3. Setting Goals

Setting goals or objectives allows the session to lead to a particular direction. Goals help both the client and counselor determine if there were changes made or if there was an improvement from the counseling sessions. This also helps to lock down commitment from a client.

4. Provide an Intervention

If needed, provide an intervention to help the client improve or get better.

5. Conduct an Evaluation

Conduct an overall assessment of the therapy session, do follow-ups, and provide referrals if you must.
