Giving consent is the act of providing an affirmative reply or permission to someone to do something. Giving consent is an act of reason and must therefore be given by a person who is of sound mind and of sufficient age in order for him to enforce consent. A lot of situations – whether in business, in schools, or in organizations – call for the consent of the person involved or the guardian of the person involved in a particular decision.
Consent may be provided through writing or through verbal means. However, a written form of consent is an official binding agreement that is signed on paper by all the parties involved. This makes a written consent more enforceable and more recognized in the legal context.

Consent can be given in varying situations. In business, for example, consent can be given in behalf of someone to perform duties or obligations that the person in charge is not capable of doing at the moment. Below is a list of the different types of consent:
Expressed Consent
Expressed consent means exactly what it sounds. It is a form of consent that is clearly stated and may be given verbally, in writing, or non-verbally, such as a mere nod of the head. However, one should be aware that a verbal or unwritten expression of consent can be disputed in court and will not sustain enough grounds to prove that the consent was indeed given.
Implied Consent
Implied consent is a type of consent that is derived from a person’s actions or circumstances. Implied consent is typically used to abide by rules or regulations. An example of this type of consent is drunk driving. Under US law, driving licenses include a consent clause that allows the police to conduct field sobriety tests to determine if a driver is intoxicated and to disallow him from cruising the streets if he is.
Informed Consent
Informed consent is typically used in the medical field. It is when a patient or an individual agrees that he already has a clear appreciation as well as an understanding of the facts of his medical condition, operation or treatment, as well as its implications.
Unanimous Consent
Unanimous consent, otherwise known as general consent, is a type of consent given by a group of several parties, such as in a parliamentary procedure or in the senate.

Substituted Consent
Substituted Consent is a type of consent obtained from the next immediate decision maker because the one expected to provide the decision is not competent to make the decision himself.
An example of this would be children under 12 years of age, who need to travel with a Travel Consent Form if the parents are not with the child, or a medical consent form wherein a guardian, a grandparent, or a babysitter is given the authority to make medical decisions for a child when the parents are not around.
Providing consent is a serious and legal matter. One should make sure that the consent is written in order for it to be enforceable in the court of law.
