Risk Assessments

A Risk Assessment is conducted by doing consistent and periodic inspections of the workplace, particularly in areas that might pose a threat or danger to employees. Another way to assess the risk factors of a workplace is by asking and interviewing staff or employees about any potential hazards that they feel should be a concern to the company. This method is found to be more effective especially since staff workers are more exposed to the work area than superiors typically are.

A Risk Assessment should be conducted with the presence of a Safety Representative. Safety Representatives are workers who are elected or selected for the role to represent the health and safety interests of workers within their work group.

To be absolutely sure that all aspects of hazard-inducing processes are found, employers have to look into the work process and procedures; non-routine activities have to be included in the evaluation, as well as people who work off-site. Employers should also observe the way the work is organized or implemented, and include an evaluation of workers depending on level, age, persons with disabilities, or expectant mothers.

Determine the People Who Are Affected

After being able to properly identify the type of harm that could be found in the workplace or in work processes, the next step to take is to identify the group of people who might be directly affected by it.

Employers and Safety Representatives can do this by envisioning how these potential hazards can directly harm full-time employees, part-time employees, field employees, consumers, and guests.

Determine the Level of Risk and Provide Preventive Measures

For every potential hazard, employers also have to determine its equivalent level of hazard. Not all risks can be completely eliminated; however, it is important to figure out ways to control it or prevent it from causing harm to employees, clients, or guests.

In order for an employer to measure the degree of risk associated with a hazard, employers have to analyze which hazard needs the most attention, the amount of exposure to the particular hazard and its frequency, and the probability of injuries or accidents. By answering these questions, employers will be able to rate the level of risk based on high, medium, or low levels and determine which ones are a priority and need immediate attention.
