The Discipline Process

The process of discipline in school or in an office typically has two different stages:

Investigation Process

The investigation process is considered to be the most crucial aspect of discipline. No matter how overwhelming a piece of evidence is and no matter how obvious an individual’s guilt is, each student or employee deserves an opportunity for a fair trial and hearing. The chance for an employee to explain himself is considered due process.

The investigation process will typically include statements from witnesses, documents that contain evidence, and interviews with the employee who was involved in the misconduct to help management or administrators formulate proper disciplinary measures.

Discipline Phase

As soon as the investigation stage is done wherein the person charged of committing an offense has been given fair trial, evidence has been properly analyzed, and charges have been verified, management and administrators can then provide the corresponding disciplinary action.

The corresponding action of discipline has to be carefully considered and should match the severity of the offense, the reason why the individual was driven to commit the offense, and the individual’s previous records.

Types of Disciplinary Actions

The method of disciplining an individual can come in different types, stages, or forms and greatly depends on several factors such as:

  • The severity of the offense.
  • The number of times the offense was committed.
  • The reason why the offense was committed.
  • The corresponding disciplinary action stated in the code of conduct.

Below are the types of disciplinary actions implemented in the workplace:

Oral and Written Warning

When really minor offenses are committed, it usually constitutes to an oral or a verbal warning initially. The attention of the employee will be called out by a supervisor so that the employee can address the issue and will not commit the same offense. Some companies provide a limit of at least two verbal warnings for one offense. This depends on the type of offense and its severity.

When a minor offense that has already been issued a warning continues to persist, a written warning is then given. A written warning will then merit an action form that is included in the employee’s files. Written warnings will then progress to heavier disciplinary actions. Some companies, however, have a threshold of up to 2 to 3 written warning before progressing to a more serious consequence depending on the gravity of the offense.

Suspension

Suspension is typically given to employees who, despite numerous verbal and written warnings, still fail to correct their mistakes or show improvement. Some offenses, however, will immediately merit an action for suspension, especially if it pertains to a grave offense.

Termination

A disciplinary action resulting to the termination of an employee is usually called for when an employee still fails to correct his ways despite verbal warnings, written warnings, and even suspension.

Some grave offenses can also merit a disciplinary action of immediate termination. For example, if you are working in a financial institution, committing theft, fraud, or dishonesty is considered to be a grave offense and can result to expulsion.
